Burning of the Reichstag

The burning of the Reichstag on the 27th February 1933, was a fundamental milestone for the consolidation of the Hitler regime.  The debate continues to rage as to the responsibility of the fire, however, with this single event Hitler condemned the communists and influenced Hindenburg to establish an emergency decree, sweeping away civil liberties and leading to the arrest enmass of suspected communists.  This decree, enabled Hitler to remove left opposition from the German Parliament and establish a majority hold by filling the vacant seats.  Four othe men were arrested for the arson, however only one was convicted Marinus van der Lubbe a Dutch communist.  Lubbe was beheaded in 1934.
